How long was your baby in NICU?

Lilbitoffaith - 12:33am Dec 27, 2007 EST
Faith Alysia 28wks (10/7/05), Ethan Bryce 30wks (12/9/07)

Let me start by saying I *know* that every baby is different....I just want an idea! My baby boy was born at 30 weeks on 12/9. He is doing fabulous and is currently able to nipple about 1/3-1/2 of his feeds...I'm just wondering how much longer its going to be before he comes home?! How long were your preemies in NICU? What was their gestation? My daughter was a 28 weeker and spent 39 days in the NICU....so I'm hoping he at least comes home by then, he's at 17 days right now...Thanks in advance for any input!

My son was 17 weeks earlyand was bounced around from NICU to NICU in an out of state for 233 days....the less you focus on the discharge date the less stressful it will be....I know its difficult but just accepting where you are at that point will keep you more sane...I promise!...Thats the only way I found some sort of normality in the chaos

4-34 weekers and 26 week twins

    how long in NICU..

I have had 5 preemies, the first 3 were all 34 weeks and 3 or 4 days.. the 4th and 5th (twins) 26 weekers..
    Baby 1- 34+3 (6# 8.5 oz) was in NICU just 3 days,
    Baby 2- 34+3 (6# 9.5 oz) was in NICU 11 days
Baby 3- 34+4 (6# 6.25 oz) was in NICU less than 24 hours
    Baby 4- 26+3 (2# 13 oz) was in 58 days
    Baby 5- 26+3 (2# 10.5 oz) was in 85 days
Every baby is different, It's all in how they respond to life on the outside... some don't mind it, (my 3rd) some HATE it (my 5th)!

Proud mommy to Madeline 33 weeker

My NICU baby was in the hospital for 30 days. Had she not had a bradychardia episode, it would have been 25. You are so lucky to have so many miracles to call you mommy. I admire your strength and you are lucky to have 5 little miracles.

My daughter was a 27 weeker and spent 65 days in the NICU. She'll have her 2nd birthday next month and is doing great. It's tough being a mother of a baby in the NICU, it seems no one could possibly understand your thoughts or feelings, but it will get easier. Things will only get better each day!

Congrats on your baby my daughter was a 34 weeker smaller than normal at 2 lbs 15oz she was at the NICU for 32 days weighing 4 lbs 5oz

    27 weekers

My twins were born at 27 weeks weighting 1 lb 12 oz and he was in for 3 months. We were very lucky that once he came home we never had to take him back again. He did come home on O2 for feedings 10 meds and a heart monitor. His sister was 2 lb 8 oz and was in for 2 months. She also was able to come home and had a pretty smooth go.

I hope that from here on out you have smooth sailing! Congrats on your little mircale!

My son was born at 31 weeks @ 4Lbs 8oz and was in the NICU for 35 days. it took him a while to get the whole "suck swallow breathe" thing down. he came home on an apnea monitor for 2 months (and he was never apnec, it ws just a precaution) as soon as he was maintaining his temp, gaining weight, and consistently took ALL of his meals at FULL FEEDS they let him come home.

Make sure they do an ultrasound on the head and check for PVL before discharge.

I have had two preemies and they each are different. My first child born at 26 weeks was in the NICU for 71 days. My second son was born at 33 weeks and was in the NICU for 3 weeks. My first son was headstrong and stubborn and was determined to get out before his due date. With my second son we were told that there is a new push to keep them in the NICU until they are at 38 or 40 weeks, but he came home at 36 weeks gestation. Besides each child being different I think it depends a lot on the doctor that you have at the time.

I had twins born at 26wks and they were in the NICU for 110 days or 3 and half months. They didn't have very many problems thank god, they were just very stubborn with their feeds. Which is a must do before they go home.

Son was born at 25 weeks

my baby boy was born at 25 weeks 1lb 10oz. His first week of life he obtained a fungus in his blood and had to get 2 surgeries the second week. Since he has a full recovery he was taken off the high frequency ventilator and after 6 weeks he was on the nasal cannula...unfortunatley it was too good to be true and he ended up going back on the high frequency as his PDA was affecting him..he got the surgery and since then he has been doing so much better, he is feeding now he was up to 20ml/3hrs but was taken off feeds for a bacteria. He is now back on feeds at 4.5oz /day so 7.5ml for 6 hrs on and 2 hrs off. He is back on the nasal cannula and was just taken off the Hnc today. He just turned 2months today and is 3lbs 2oz...gestistational age "33" weeks + 5 Saturday he will be 34 weeks and we will begin trying to nipple feed. We have been in the Nicu for 62 days so far.

Welcome to share! It sounds like your little one has been through so much but is such a fighter and has come through it all really well. I hope that you find this to be a place of comfort and support. Some find that starting a blog, posting a short story or just posting often is comforting.

We hope to see you around often and to hear all of the news about your son.
    Take care,
    Ellen

Christina: Hello and welcome to Share! I'm so sorry to hear of the struggles that your little guy had been through, however, that's wonderful news he's off of the high flow nasal cannula and may even be trying to nipple feed Saturday! I hope that he does well and continues to gain weight and improve, I look forward to reading updates on your little fighter!

Son was born at 25 weeks

Thank you we just had our monthly conference and the Dr. Told us that it will be another 6-7 week stay the good thing is that our son will be protected from the flu while in the NICU. This Saturday completed 9 weeks in the NICU so we are more than half way there we can see the light. It still makes me sad because having to leave him there everyday is still hard for me. I always cry for my baby boy but never at the bedside soon I won't have to cry anymore.

Well you are right every baby is different. We celebrated our 1st bday last month in the NICU. Looking at a discharge date of Feb, 2011 which totals our NICU stay to about 14.5 months. Not too discourage you but you can do it! No matter how long, 1 day at a time. 1 foot down the hall at a time.
