The Miracle Baby- Jessica's Story

sweetpea1120 - 07:45am Mar 10, 2012 EST

Good Morning Everyone:

First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my story. I am the "Miracle Baby," my name is Jessica Lucas (Phillips-maiden name). No, I am not a parent to a premature child, but I am the product of a family that knows the power of prayer. It was by FAITH and the constant prayers of my mother, Janice M. Phillips and my father, CW Phillips along with the rest of my family and friends that God allowed me to be here.

Prior to my birth at 28 weeks on July 17, 1983, my mother had 5 miscarriages (I just recently learned on March 9, 2012, that all of them were to be boys.) I was the first born and the first girl. At any rate, my father knew that God would not allow my mother to keep getting pregnant if He did not want her to have a child. (THANKS DAD!!!!!) My original due date was to be on Sunday, November 1, 1983, but God had other plans. I arrived on Sunday, July 17, 1983 at 1 pound and 4 ounces. Needless to say, doctors and nurses at Shands NICU way back then kept me for 4 long days until I began to improve and I did. Blindness was strong and I had to be fed through tubes that I vaguely remember were inserted into my head.

Many tests were done on my vision, breathing passageways and others key areas to make sure I was going to be OK. Per my mother, the doctors who were tending to her said that if I did live, I would be considered a vegetable and I would mainly have to rely on others for everything. Develop mentally, I would be slow and hard to educate when I started school. I am happy to say that I am currently enrolled at Walden University working on my Master's in Non-Profit Management and Leadership. I also received my Bachelor's in Journalism from the University of Florida in 2006.

I want to thank God for His presence in my life, my parents for believing and trusting in their own faith and my grandparents who have instilled in me the value and the worth of prayer. Yes, prayer still works. I would also like to honor my daughter Madison Bijan Lucas who weighed in at 8 pounds and 4 ounces on Sunday, November 20, 2011. God definitely has a sense of humor. A 1 pound, 4 ounce baby grew up to have an 8 pound, 4 ounce baby. Both were born on a Sunday and the distance between the two is 7 which means everything is perfect!! Thanks again for taking the time to read my story and always remember that God will always bring miracles.

Blessings Forever,

Jessica L. Lucas

Thanks for that story. I am sure other micro-preemie moms will be glad to see that you are ok!
I was a preemie in 1984 and my son was born earlier even in gestation than I was in 2010. When I was in the NICU with my son I always liked to think about the fact that my mom said there were micro preemies back then who survived. i always wondered about how they were now. This gives me a clue. Thanks

THank you for sharing your story, I was a premie in 1983 and back then they didnt give parents a lot of hope. I wasnt as early but I was very sick due to and ABO blood incapatibility. Its always amazing to see awsome stories of little one beating all the odd and becoming successful adults.

Welcome back to Share. Congratulations on your baby daughter! She sounds wonderful and hopefully you are starting to sleep through...

    Ivazquez:

Yes HE does. Oh, and she has been sleeping throughout the night. Madison only wakes up when she's hungry or needs a diaper changed. Thank the LORD.

Thanks brookeg. I really appreciate faith and God entirely for everything. The Master's will be a great accomplishment, but Madison brings me a lot more joy.

Mom to Donovyn (32 weeker), Tristyn (34 weeker), and Naethyn (30 weeker born sleeping)

Jessica, that's wonderful to hear that she is letting her parents get some shut eye. Lucky:) I'm kind of funny about numbers too. One of my kiddos has a b-day on 11-21, so I know that someone else will also be celebrating in that month. Fast forward to a couple of years depending on how it falls, and our kiddos may even have their b-days on Turkey Day! How cool!
