My heart aches for you. I don't know how you feel, I don't pretend to understand the depth of your pain. But know that even from thousands of miles and an ocean away, I am thinking of you, wishing things were so very different, crying for your loss, for Akeelah who should be here, holding her brother's hand and basking in all the love you have in your heart and soul for her.
You are an amazing woman to do what you do to honor your daughter. She is so, so proud that you are her mother. This I know.

First of all, the StoryCorps thing is freaking awesome!! I love that.
I am constantly amazed at how much affect Akeelah's life has made on the world. We are better for having her. I know adults who cannot say the same.

It's so important to get those cries out. I know that you miss her deeply. No parent should ever have to prepare for a birthday in this way and yet so many of us do. I'm glad that you do have a peaceful retreat in mind and when the sadness overwhelmes you, squeeze little Micah:)

I wish there was something I could do to help take your pain away. I can't imagine how hard that was to watch Micah with your neighbor's daughter - but I bet Akeelah was holding his other hand and walking right along side him.

I agree with Julie, the StoryCorps thing is awesome. I also agree with everyone else that although the years may pass by, the pain and sadness don't change. I wish I could say something to make it better - but know that I'm thinking of you and Akeelah.

I wish I could give you more than virtual hugs and telling you how much my heart aches because of how much yours does. I wish you had your Akeelah in your arms to celebrate her birthday...
You are one amazing mom. I don't know how many times I've said that, but I'll say it a million more. Everytime I say it, it's with tears in my eyes and awe in my heart and all the truth that ever was. Akeelah and Micah are SO blessed to have you.
I wish you peace and comfort as you move ever closer to your sweet girl's birthday. I'll have you in my heart and mind.
