How long was your baby in NICU?

Lilbitoffaith - 12:33am Dec 27, 2007 EST
Faith Alysia 28wks (10/7/05), Ethan Bryce 30wks (12/9/07)

Let me start by saying I *know* that every baby is different....I just want an idea! My baby boy was born at 30 weeks on 12/9. He is doing fabulous and is currently able to nipple about 1/3-1/2 of his feeds...I'm just wondering how much longer its going to be before he comes home?! How long were your preemies in NICU? What was their gestation? My daughter was a 28 weeker and spent 39 days in the NICU....so I'm hoping he at least comes home by then, he's at 17 days right now...Thanks in advance for any input!

He's home!

Ethan came home on Saturday! He is currently using a car bed because he couldn't pass his car seat challenge, but we'll do whatever we need to to have him home! He spent a total of 34 days in the NICU. They felt SO unbearably long while we were there, but now they're just a blur! Yay!

    mom of 26 weekers

my twins were born at 26 weeks. Aidan spent 5 months in the NICU. Lanndon came home at 3 months but because of his problems he ended up going back in for another 4 months. they are both home now and are doing great. I should warn u that it is never over. Both of mine have been in and out with the flu and bronchitis. The smallest cold can get worse over night with these little premies so be prepared.

Hang in there. I hope your boys continue to improve. It was a long road for me with my "oldest" triplet who was so sick - but we eventually got there. Hang in there.

    Take care,

Mason was a 33 weeker weighing 6 lb 8 oz.
Here in england we call it scbu rather than nicu but anyway he was there 23 days. Came off oxygen at 8 days but he was a bit of a lazy boy with his feeds hence the reason he took a while longer to come home.

My son Michael was born at 29 weeks and weighed 2 lbs. and spent 68 days in the NICU and came home 5 days before his original due date. He had to be able to drink from a bottle within so much time (I think it was like 20 to 30 minutes) and he had to be able to hold his own temperature. He came out of his incubator 1 day before he was released, and he weighed 5 lbs. 7 oz. the day he was released. Today he is 19 months old.

    Congratulations!

I think a read your message a little late

I know how much happy you must feel now. It is so difficult to have your baby in the NICU the only wish you have is can have your baby at home.

Natalia was a 35 weeker, she weight less than 3 pounds when was born. She was in the NICU by 1 month. When she was 2 months old she had a cirugy but now she is ok, beautiful, and smiles a lot.

I know that every baby is different but when my son was in the NICU I wanted to here from other moms about how long he'd be in the hospital.

If it helps, my son was born at 33 weeks and was in the NICU for 12 days.

my daughter was 33 1/2 weeks early and spent 1 month in the NICU. I suffered from Toxemia or pre eclampsia. She weighed 3 lbs 14 oz. I also wished i had another mom going through it to talk to because it was the hardest thing i ever had to experience.

I wish you all the best!

My lil girl was 3 1/2 months early and was in there til her due date. This is what all the nurses told me, "Expect her home around her due date". She ended up coming home one day after her due date. She was born 11-19-07 came home, 03-03-08. Good Luck, Erin.

Re: How long was your baby in NICU?

My second son was in the NICU for 60 days. He was born at 29 weeks gestation and weighed 2lbs 2oz...He had very few complications while he was in the NICU except for sometimes he couldn't tolerate his feedings and would have to be taken back off of them and an infection here and there, but nothing serious...they basically wouldn't let him come home til he was over 5 lbs. He finally came home when he was 5 lbs 3 oz and came home on a sleep apnea monitor.

My son Caleb was very fortunate. He was born at 31 weeks, and weighed in at 5 lbs 1.2 oz. He only spent 11 days in the NICU.

I am very sorry for those who have children in the NICU for long periods of time. Anytime a child goes to the NICU it is stressful, and very scary. And even though not being able to bring him home immediately was so hard, I do feel that it was beneficial to him.

He is now a big 17 month old. He currently weighs around 35 lbs and is about 34 inches tall.

Simon was born at 24 weeks 1 day at 1 lb 7 oz and 12 inches long. He was released from the hospital on day 115. He was at full feeds for about 2 weeks before coming home at 6 pounds 3.4 ounces and 17.5" long.

Talan is currently 8 lbs 10 oz!

    Twin 27 weekers...

My girls were born at 27 weeks. They were real small because they were twins. They were in NICU for 58 days and 59 days. They came home a day apart. It was the hardest months of my life, or so I thought...Twins at home is not so easy either, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Good Luck

    27 week twins...

My boys were 27 weekers weighing 2 pounds 3 ounces and 1 pound 14 ounces. Ryan (baby A) came home 52 days after he was born and Chase (baby came home 89 days after he was born and on my due date. I always said that he knew he wasn't really due till then so he chose to wait around until it was truly time to be home! LOL! I also agree with Kricket- twins do keep you very busy but its great!
