How long was your baby in NICU?

Lilbitoffaith - 12:33am Dec 27, 2007 EST
Faith Alysia 28wks (10/7/05), Ethan Bryce 30wks (12/9/07)

Let me start by saying I *know* that every baby is different....I just want an idea! My baby boy was born at 30 weeks on 12/9. He is doing fabulous and is currently able to nipple about 1/3-1/2 of his feeds...I'm just wondering how much longer its going to be before he comes home?! How long were your preemies in NICU? What was their gestation? My daughter was a 28 weeker and spent 39 days in the NICU....so I'm hoping he at least comes home by then, he's at 17 days right now...Thanks in advance for any input!

Isabella-My 2yr old (29 weeks) and Sebastian (38 wks 2days) 2 mths old

First off let me say Congrats on the birth of Ethan!! He is a cutie pie! My daughter Isabella was born at 29 weeks and she stayed in the NICU for 45 days. You are right that every baby is different and she had a PDA that had to be ligated. Other than that she was a healthy baby. I hope that your baby comes home soon and keep us posted as to his homecoming and well being.

Good luck and lots of Hugs while in the NICU and transitioning home,
Donnavie

My Alex was born at 28 weeks and weighed 1 pound 15 ounces due to IUGR. He spent exactly 9 weeks in the NICU.

Congrats, agreed what a cutie!!
I had twins, 26 weekers who were in the NICU almost 3 months (4 days short). My little girl did not nipple all her bottles at teh time, I took her home and worked wiht her. What she didn't eat or wasn't able to bottle, I fed through her NG tube.
My little guy was bottling 100%.
ALl NICU have different criteria.. ours were #1- No A's and B's that were nto self resolved, #2- maintain their own temp in open crib for 48 hours #3- taking all feeds for 48 hours.
As I said we brought our daughter home wihtout meeting the last criteria. She was home one month before we were able to pull the NG... she actually is nippling better with it out. IMAGINE THAT!!!
My oldest is 2 he was born at 35 weeks and we spent 7 days in the NICU.
YOu are correct every baby is different!!
Good luck!!

A mirco-preemie and his BRO....

Congrats on your cute little guy! what a doll!
I had my first one and he was a 24weeker and we spented 120 days in the NICU, He was doing very well for a 24 weeker but also had our probs too, would't gain weight ,then he would not thrive, then we had a few surgerys, and after them we moved on and we had failed the car seat test, but then passed but in the long run, he is 14 going on 15 and is a very happy healthy teenager!! Everyone is differnet but love is all anyone needs and God will do the rest. Bless you and your family.

20 days for us..

My daughter was born December 11th, 2007, and was 6wks & 2 days early. Born at 33wks (almost 34wks). She was on oxygen for 1 week, and had jaundice for 2 days, and was also having episodes where her heartrate would drop below 80bpm. But everything cleared up pretty quickly. I went to visit her on the 29th, and the nurse said she thought she would be released in maybe a week or two. The next day I got a call saying she was being released on December 31st. That made 20 days total for us. Every baby is different. He looks like he's got a little fighter in him, he'll come home when he's ready.

we were in the NICU for 136 days...!

My 34 weeker spent 13 days in the NICU due to apnea. She came home on a monitor, but they would not let her go home until she went three days without an episode, which of course she had one on Christmas Eve.

Proud mommy of Emily Madeleine and Sydney Ann

Emily was a 28 weeker (15.5 ounces!) and spent three months exactly in the NICU! For a total of 92 days!

Our Criteria for coming home were:
1- 4 pounds or greater
2- Taking all feeds by bottle within 20 minutes (no pressure! lol)
3-Maintaining body temp for 24 hours in an open crib
4-Passing the car seat challenge!

Good luck!

He's a little cutie!! My daughter is a 27 weeker and was due Sept. 25th. She came home on Sept. 7th which was 2 months and 12 days in the NICU. They always told us that there wasn't a "weight goal" that she had to meet, but that when she could suck, breathe, and swallow with no "episodes" and maintain her own body temp. she could go home. They told us not to get our hopes up until her due date. We were pleased and surprised to get her home a couple of weeks earlier than that!!

Re: Thanks for all the replies!

Hang in there. One of mine failed the carseat test before he passed - it was SO frustrating! I thought that was basically just a technicality - and when he didn't pass.... I was SO upset!

I can't wait to hear when Ethan is home!

    Take care< Kara

Congrats on Ethan. He is so cute. My son was born at 31 weeks and spent 28 days in the NICU. He would have come home sooner, but he had a PDA that did not want to close. I wish you lots of luck! I am sure that he will be home before you know it. God bless

    He's home!

Ethan came home on Saturday! He is currently using a car bed because he couldn't pass his car seat challenge, but we'll do whatever we need to to have him home! He spent a total of 34 days in the NICU. They felt SO unbearably long while we were there, but now they're just a blur! Yay!

    mom of 26 weekers

my twins were born at 26 weeks. Aidan spent 5 months in the NICU. Lanndon came home at 3 months but because of his problems he ended up going back in for another 4 months. they are both home now and are doing great. I should warn u that it is never over. Both of mine have been in and out with the flu and bronchitis. The smallest cold can get worse over night with these little premies so be prepared.

Hang in there. I hope your boys continue to improve. It was a long road for me with my "oldest" triplet who was so sick - but we eventually got there. Hang in there.

Mason was a 33 weeker weighing 6 lb 8 oz.
Here in england we call it scbu rather than nicu but anyway he was there 23 days. Came off oxygen at 8 days but he was a bit of a lazy boy with his feeds hence the reason he took a while longer to come home.

My son Michael was born at 29 weeks and weighed 2 lbs. and spent 68 days in the NICU and came home 5 days before his original due date. He had to be able to drink from a bottle within so much time (I think it was like 20 to 30 minutes) and he had to be able to hold his own temperature. He came out of his incubator 1 day before he was released, and he weighed 5 lbs. 7 oz. the day he was released. Today he is 19 months old.

    Congratulations!

I think a read your message a little late

I know how much happy you must feel now. It is so difficult to have your baby in the NICU the only wish you have is can have your baby at home.

Natalia was a 35 weeker, she weight less than 3 pounds when was born. She was in the NICU by 1 month. When she was 2 months old she had a cirugy but now she is ok, beautiful, and smiles a lot.

I know that every baby is different but when my son was in the NICU I wanted to here from other moms about how long he'd be in the hospital.

If it helps, my son was born at 33 weeks and was in the NICU for 12 days.

my daughter was 33 1/2 weeks early and spent 1 month in the NICU. I suffered from Toxemia or pre eclampsia. She weighed 3 lbs 14 oz. I also wished i had another mom going through it to talk to because it was the hardest thing i ever had to experience.

I wish you all the best!

    Hi all...Welcome to Share.....

Please keep in mind that all babies are different, I am so happy that you all have had positive outcomes with your babies...but some babies born at that gestation do not do as well!

I'm so glad you all found Share!

    Warmly
