NEW YEAR; NEW ATTITUDE
|
 |

Jan 02, 2012 04:30pm (EST)
We had a great holiday trip home to Virginia. Abigail enjoyed seeing her cousins from my family for Christmas and then my in-laws all came into DC for a few days and she enjoyed seeing the zoo and monuments with them. She really was so good for the whole trip. People complimented her resiliency (she never won at Wii but never once complained and always wanted to play) and overall sunny disposition and somehow I can't take a compliment for her. This year I am going to figure out how to do that without being the mom who sounds like, "Of course, my kid is perfect".
She was so excited with her doll after we visited the American Girl Doll Store. Santa believed she was old enough to take care of the doll so now she seems to feel so much better and we let her get a pet to go with it. She said the horse was out of her budget (I guess we have taught her some money sense). I hope she continues this feeling of confidence, even if it comes from Santa.
We had a terrible Christmas musical/pagent season b/c she can't sing (seriously it is so high it honestly hurts your ears) and it was a HUGE issue at school so I am hoping the start of the New Year will help.
She starts spelling tests this week and her tutor is really worried about her having to write fast (and so is her mother). But I am going to try to stay positive. Really there are no more shoes to drop, right? I sure hope so.
Happy New Year. Here's to a smile everyday.

GOOD DAY
|
 |

Nov 30, 2011 12:57pm (EST)
Thank you guys for all of the comments. I wanted to post a happy blog and yesterday Abigail came home from school so happy. I picked her up from tutoring (she loves her tutor and her handwriting looked really good yesterday) and she was bubbling over with all of the good things from school...moving up in reading, gym, finishing her lunch...I know these things sound small but I think you all can appreciate how much some of them mean to me. Today is tennis so I can hope that the happiness continues.
I only have three lectures and two exams to go (yes, I am one of those professors) and my graduate students have oral exams next week so lots to do here but I am determined now to enjoy the season. Once the new month starts my goal is to head back to the cafe and keep up this time.

That is about all I can say about first grade so far. Abigail loves it somedays but... We are getting such mixed messages from her teacher. She says she is doing great and then we got her report card and she got almost all beginnings (they don't use grades "beginning, developing, secure). She has gotten almost all perfect papers in math, How is that beginning? Patrick teaches in the same school and he was confused. We expected the writing part to be bad but it was terrible, she said Abigail is improving but writes simple stories to concentrate on letter formation (yes, that is her major problem) and maybe it will get better when she can use a computer. Seriously there is nothing we can do between now and when she learns to touch-type. i am so frustrated. This is the same teacher who thought having a handwriting tutor was too much pressure. Her tutor is so sweet and at least we are trying something.
She did great in all of the behavior categories and they said she plays well with all of her classmates and is a thoughtful friend. Abigail was so excited to get her Progress Report that we just told her she did great and took her out to Chipotle. She wanted me to read it to her but I just couldn't. I'll talk to the teacher today and see what we can do. Maybe everyone gets mostly beginnings. Every teacher does it differently.
On a high note, Abigail is actually swimming pretty well and she loves her lessons and is really enjoying tennis. I think it will pay off in the long run. My parents might pay her a surprise visit this weekend and I know she will be super-excited if they can make it since we are staying here for Thanksgiving. They're worried about our little worrier and my mom has been mailing her lots of treats.
Have a great day.

FIRST ENTRY

I have never had a blog before. Somehow I felt like no one would ever read it but I guess that is not really the only point of a blog. In fact, I can't count the number of times I have encouraged other women on this site to start a blog and yet, I never have. Abigail is already 6.5. I can't believe it. She is my baby. She will be my only baby, which is also somedays hard for me to believe. I often wonder why her prematurity will never leave me. I feel like I dwell on it too much but...The other day we were at tennis lessons. The teacher was saying that she was "her little two hander" b/c she is so weak and tiny she needs two hands for her forehand still while the others definitely don't. The teacher was saying it was so nice the other kids didn't make fun of her (she takes lessons with three of her friends). Really, is she that small and different. She grew five inches in the last six months. I thought she was really starting to look better. The teacher didn't mean anything by it. In fact she was being v. positive but I took it so hard and when I saw the look on her dad's face, I could tell he was hurt too. I guess we still have a few miles to go before we rest.
