I delivered my lil boy on May 1st at 26 weeks. He was 1 lb 5.4 ozs and 11 3/4 inches long. He is in the process of recovering from a nec scare right now. Hes finally hit 2lbs as of today. Although the doctors estimate he'll remain there for another 3 months. Almost 1 month down and three more to go.

Re: York
Hi Bekah,
Congratulations on the arrival of your sweet baby boy! I know it feels like an eternity until you can bring your son home. Try to be patient, and love on him. Your love and presence will bring him through this, one day at a time.
I will keep him in my prayers, that his little tummy continues to heal. My girls each had a NEC scare, and its just that, SCARY!!
I live in Illinois (outside of Chicago) now, but I'm originally from Altoona, Pa.
Welcome to SHARE. You will find great support and advice (if you need it) here. Keep us posted on your little guy.

Reading PA
Here's about my 2 little munchkins . . . The pregnancy was going great! I found myself reading numerous books, as any 1st time mother would do and I followed all the precautions to make sure my 1st pregnancy would be a success. But then the unexpected happened. Our little boy, Jacob, was born 6 weeks premature on Dec 26th 2002. He weighed 4lbs 13oz and 17.5 inches long. The NICU team was standing by just in case they needed to take him. He didn't go to the NICU. He was well enough to go to what is called the Well-Baby Nursery. The biggest set back was when he developed Jaundice, shortly after birth and we couldn't bring him home. When I was released from the hospital, I was so upset and devastated. Our little boy had to stay 2 extra days. He came home 2 days later. When he came home he needed to have a "wallaby blanket"(photo therapy blanket) on him for his jaundice for about 1 1/2 weeks. He had no sucking reflexes so breastfeeding was difficult, we had to syringe feed him for a couple days, he couldn't pass his bowels real well, we had to help him. He is now 2 yrs old. He has a speech delay which makes him developmentally 15 months behind in speech and 3 mos behind otherwise, he is receiving therapy once a week. Jacob also has a lazy eye in his left eye. He sees an eye specialist every 6 mos. Jacob has a sister. In October 2003, my husband and I learned again that we were pregnant with our second child. We were considered a High-Risk pregnancy due to the fact of me having Gestational Diabetes and at 18 weeks we learned our baby to be would be a little girl. This tickled both of our hearts because we already have a son. Our family would be complete.
Our daughter, Kylie, was born March 31st, 2004. She had a head full of dark hair and had blue eyes. She was 7 pounds 8.4 ounces and was 20 inches long. She was beautiful. Three months after our daughter was born we started to notice strange symptoms swollen legs, bluish face and extremities, fussiness, trouble breathing which Katie suspected might be related to a heart murmur doctors had told her was innocent. Her heart murmur was not innocent. Kylie is now 14 months old, she was diagnosed at 4 months of age with congenital heart defects called pulmonary stenosis (her case was severe at the time), where blood flow from the heart to the pulmonary artery is blocked, and atrial septal defect, a hole in the walls of her top two chambers. They are life-threatening without surgery. Kylie had intervention done on her heart back in Sept 2004. She currently has minimal blockage and the hole in her heart. She will need to take antibiotics for any surgical and dental procedure. And she will continue to see her team of cardiologists. Congenital heart defects are problems with the structure and development of the heart that are present at birth. In most cases, the cause is unknown, according to the March of Dimes. Heart defects are the No. 1 birth defect. There are about 35 identified types of heart defects.
Both of our children, have been through a lot. They have been through numerous blood tests, x-rays, hospital stays, doctors visits and ER visits. Kylie had something called a balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty done on her Pulmonary Valve. She goes for a checkup this friday and I'm anxious to know how things have been going since her last appointment back in January. Another heart mom and myself started a support group in Southeastern Pennsylvania called Mended Little Hearts of SouthEastern PA. There is a national website it is http://www.mendedhearts.org/mlh/frame-mlh.htm ~*Katie*~

Re: Reading PA
Katie....I am close to Reading as well....I actually spent almost 2 weeks on bed rest and gave birth to my daughter in the "Reading Hospital and Medical Center" - I am out near Kutztown! My daughter, Lauren, was born September 27, 2004 and was 10 weeks early at 3 lbs. 13 ozs..... Premature Rupture of Membranes with no explanation why! That was the scariest, most terrible time of my entire life. Did you have your children in Reading or did you have to go elsewhere? We were very impressed with the NICU at the hospital and just knew those doctors and nurses were Lauren's special angels....she had to spend about 4 1/2 weeks there and she is doing very well now. She is a little delayed but she is just developing by leaps and bounds. I still worry about her all the time and pray that she continues to improve. I will say a prayer that your little girl Kylie has a great checkup this Friday......

Re: Reading PA
Hi Sara, Yeah I delivered both of my children at Reading Hospital. I had a midwife both times. Jacob required no NICU stay and no NICU period which was total amazement to everyone that was present. My room was filled with hospital people when I delievered. I too had "Premature Rupture of the membranes" and there was no explanation they even tested the placenta, and nothing! Then when I had Kylie, she was full term but it was a shock when we learned about her heart condition. Jacob is delayed. He does not talk they don't know why. He does receive therapy for speech so now we are awaiting to hear if they want to get his vocals checked. KYLIE'S CARD. APPT. WENT WONDERFULLY!!!!!! She'll go back in 6 months
in December. Nothing has changed and that is a good thing. Dr Cyran, Kylie's heart
doctor is gonna send a report to her pediatrician about Kylie and said
about her maybe seeing an orthopedic because of her legs turning
purple when she stands. He said the PT will help her with that as
well. As far as the OT that should help too with eating foods like
yogurt and baby food texture even though she is not eating baby food.
With her huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf, that is what they
want, it means her heart is working really well but if she passes out
to let them know. It's good to know her heart is working stronger.
They didn't do an echocardiogram but from the EKG it has shown that
nothing has changed which is great news! Her O2 levels are at 100%. ~*Katie*~

Re: Reading PA
Melissa - I am 2 minutes outside of Kutztown....I actually graduated from King's college (PA) but this is my husband's hometown....his cousin is going to KU next year too! Small world....
Katie....I'm glad to hear that Kylie's appt. went so well. That is AWESOME!!!!
It is also amazing that your son didn't have to spend anytime in the NICU....that is so great. These babies are such fighters....
I'm sure Jacob's speech will pick up soon....but I'm also sure that it is hard waiting for it to happen! I've been "looking" around this MOD website for a while and have read so many different things - and I'm sure you are well aware of the fact that oftentimes a preemie's speech is delayed - and then all of a sudden they just start to pick it up and then you can't make them STOP talking! I hope that is the case with your little guy too!!! But I'm sure you are worried about it so hopefully those doc's will tell you something good when he gets his vocals checked. Anyways, thanks for the reply....good luck with your two little angels.....Sara Bryant

Re: Anyone in Pittsburgh??
Hi Amy - Yes, I'm from the Burg! I had a 33 1/2 weeker, Emma, that also spent a couple of weeks in Magee's NICU! I loved the picture of Maddie in the swing! I'm not technically adept enough to attach a picture - but Emma had the same Ocean Wonders swing and loved it! We thought it was a God send, because it was one of the few things that would entertain her, so that we could actually get other stuff done! Our Emma is now 17 months old! How is everything going for you and Maddie? Anne

WalkAmerica - Western PA Kickoff!
Hi everyone! I'm Erin and I am co-chair of the Family Teams for the Pittsburgh Walk 2006! My son, Aidan, was born at 30 weeks on December 29th, 2004, due to sudden, severe, Pre-Eclampsia. He spent 71 days in the NICU and is a NEC survivor.
Last year was the first time I participated in a walk and it was awesome! It was so nice to meet other families and share our stories! It's great to finally talk to someone else that understands what you are going thru!
The reason for this post is that I would like to announce the Western Pa Family Teams Kickoff on Monday, March 6th, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m at the Children's Museum in Pittsburgh. The Family Teams Kickoff is for all veteran and new Family Teams from Pittsburgh, Beaver, Butler, Ellwood City, Greensburg, New Castle, Fayette and Washington.
This is an opportunity to get together to share ideas on fundraising and get excited about this year's walk! It is also a time for the families to connect with one another - as parents of preemies, we share a special bond and we all strive for a common goal - preventing prematurity. As part of the party, we hope to even have a visit from the 2006 National Ambassador, Alexa Ostolaza of Gainesville, FL!!
If you have any questions about the walk or about forming a family team, please don't hesitate to ask or email me!
We will be sending out invitations soon, but if you don't get one, please email me! We are looking forward to this year's walk and hope to make it a tremendous success, with the help of Family Teams!

Allentown/Bethlehem Area
Hi! My name is Julie. My son Joshua was born last March at 32 weeks. He weighed 4lbs. 6oz. He was in the hospital for one month. I can't believe he is already one year old. I was wondering if anyone from the area delivered at Lehigh Valley Hospital or had a baby in the NICU there. If so, please tell me about your experience. Our experience was good but there was no support group of any kind and my husband and I felt alone. I would like to start something there so parents have someone to talk to. Let me know your thoughts.

Anyone from Delaware County?
I live in Sprinfield, Delaware County. I have a two year old - Emily and 6 month old twins - Hannah and Isabelle who were born at 26weeks on Thanksgiving morning!!!! They weighed 1lb 10oz and measured 13 1/2 inches long.
Hannah was given slim to zero chance of survival, Issy's chances were very slightly better. They spent 83 and 91 days respectively in the NICU at Lankenau hospital. Hannah then spent 3 weeks at CHOP for a severe cold.
At their six month check up, Hannah weighed 10lb 4 oz and Issy weighed 11lb 3 oz - i can hardly believe we made it this far!!!

Operation: Kates' Blood Drive 7/29/06 King of Prussia PA
On July 29th at the Radisson Hotel in King of Prussia PA (right outside of Philadelphia) My family and I are holding a Blood Drive in memory of my little angel Katherine Taylor "Katie" Bralski
Katie was a little impatient and thinking she had a round trip ticked decided she wanted to meet her mommy and grandparents sooner than her due date. Katie was born March 22, 2006 only 22 week pregnant I was very scared. Katie spent the rest of her precious little life fighting. 12 days later my little girl was unable to fight any longer and decided it was time to become an Angel. While she was in the NICU unit at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia she needed alot of blood. Which we all know as most of us here are Mommies of precious little preemie babies. Because of this my family and I with the help of the Red Cross, are having Operation: Katie's Blood Drive- this is our first one , with many more to come. This will be a yearly if not semi-yearly thing we will be holding. I am inviting anyone in the Philadelphia area and beyond that would like to help a little child out by donating blood it would be a wonderful thing!!
If you are interested please email me at Katiesmommy0322@aol.com and I will get you all of the info you need to schedule an appointment - or if you cant please see if someone you know can and will!! I thank you all for reading this. and I pray for all Parents that have been in my situation and Pray for all preemies born every day.
Thanks
Tana Bralski

To Katies Mommy,
I have family in the Philly area. My Uncle in the COO of CHOP, I am passing the info of the blood drive on to him. My cousin Ryan who is the son of the COO has cancer and they have a foundation called ConKerr that fights for cancer research. I will be sure to let them all know of your events so that they can spread the word. They live about 5 mins from the hotel. I am sure that they will be very interested because prematurity has also affected our family. Good Luck and Beat Wishes.
Feel Free to contact me at any time.

CHD Awareness Week
State and local government officials will proclaim Feb. 7-14, 2007 as "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week." Every year families and professionals across the country will join together to celebrate Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. This is a week set aside each year to honor families of children and adults with congenital heart defects and disease (CHDs) and the professionals who work with them, and to cherish the memory of lives lost. By raising awareness, we can make a difference for future generations and find meaning in the challenges our children and adults face.
Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, made a proclamation giving new meaning to the week of February 7th - 14th 2007. The proclamation named Febraury 7th - 14th 2007 Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Week at the request of Pottstown, Pennsylvania resident Katie Busch, whose daughter suffers from two congenital heart defects was received.
“Valentine’s Day holds a special meaning. It’s not about flowers or chocolates; it’s about love and life. It’s time to honor the children and adults that are living with congenital heart defects and remember the ones we lost.” says Katie.
The proclamation said the observance of "A Day for Hearts: Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week" helps to educate the public about CHDs and learn about possible treatment options and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. The observance also recognizes the cardiac doctors, nurses and researchers that assist those affected by the condition and allows citizens to recognize those born with the defect and remember those who had CHD but have since died.
Busch asked that all Pennsylvania citizens learn more about congenital heart defects and support education and research so that children and adults with CHDs may lead longer and more active lives.
Each year, an estimated 40,000 babies are born in the United States with a congenital heart defect; CHDs are the most common birth defect and the number one cause of death from birth defects during infancy. Nearly twice as many children die from congenital heart defects as from all childhood cancers combined, yet research for cancer receives five times the funding. This is due in large part to the lack of awareness most people have about congenital heart defects.

I just read your post about the prematurity summit and I'm surprised I didn't hear about it in my son's backpack. He goes to the WPSBC. I would have liked to go to your gathering. (I have former 26-week twins Jacob--who goes to the school for the blind--and Hanna). Is there something next year maybe?

In Pittsburgh
Hi
I am in here in Pittsburgh and feel woefully out of touch. Is there a mailing list I can get on or meetings I can go to. My daughter (29 weeks) is now 21/2 and would like to connect with others and hopefully volunteer. As with everyone our time is not abundant but we had a great stay at Magee and would like to know how to help. Maybe with the Walk or Prematurity Awareness month?
Thanks.

Ellen-
Have you been in touch with your local office there in Pittsburgh. I was there a few weeks ago to talk to some NICU families and there are some wonderful Moms that are volunteering. The staff in Pittsburgh is AMAZING. Call Kelley Malcolm at the Pittsburgh office and tell her you are interested in volunteering. She will steer you in the right direction. I know that I met a few other moms who also were at Magee. I am pretty sure that they are doing a Day of Gratitude there at Magee in November that you may be able to get involved with. Tell them Melissa from Philly said HELLO!!

Re: In Pittsburgh
I, too, am mommy to a 29-weeker now 2 1/2. I'm in Williamsport (North-central PA). I haven't been on the site in some time. My daughter was born at Geisinger Medical Center/Janet Weis Children's Hospital and spent 40 days in the NICU. The hospital now has a MOD employee working in the NICU as a Family Support specialist. Last summer they implemented a Family Support committee made up of NICU staff (doctors, nurses, social workers, etc), parents of NICU grads, and personnel from area agencies such as Early Intervention. It's the only such program in the state. I, too, was anxious to do something to volunteer with the MOD and eagerly accepted the invitation to join the committee. We are doing great work for families with infants in the NICU. I feel like I am actually doing something that makes a difference. We met today in fact. We will be holding our first "Light a Little Star" event at the hospital next month (see lightalittlestar.org). We're in Danville, PA if you want to check out the link. Our event will be a mini-fundraiser and a NICU reunion event for babies discharged from the NICU in 2006. We were in 2005, but we'll be there since I'm on the committee. I'm looking forward to it. There are only a handful of these events in the country - I believe only 2 in PA. Maybe you could put-together an event like this in your area.

Re: Looking for some PA families
I was so excited to find this folder. Melissa, I somehow missed catching up with you at Share Union. I live in Lititz, PA, just north of Lancaster. My family relocated here from CT earlier this year. We're in an apartment while we're house-hunting, and we'll most likely end up somewhere outside of Philly within a year or so - maybe around Exton/West Chester, depending on what we find.
So the Lancaster office has some things going on? Yay! I can't wait to get involved. I'm going to try to get in touch with them and see what sorts of things they need volunteers for.

How exactly did I miss you?? I was so busy crying and laughing that I seemed to lose track.
I do not know where Lititz is located but I put in a few calls this morning and figured out who your staff would be. I do not know these people personally but I hear from a good source that they are wonderful.
But if you move to the West Chester area then..you will be in my division!! whoo hoo. I hope that you are able to walk there with us!
I would be happy to email this information to you.

Sorry to take forever to reply. I've been sick and so has my 2 year old. Our first bout of Croup, It's been awful! He's finally doing better. I would love to help....my time is limited though. I babysit, have a 2 year old, work 1 night a week, and I am in school. Every time I write it out like that I feel like I do too much. Anyway...we'll be at the walk and I have started a family team. Jacob/Jaidon is our team name. My two year old is Jacob and Jaidon is the name we chose for the baby we lost in December. Anyway. Maybe I'll see you at the walk, I hope the turn out is as good as last year. There were a lot of people there.

Hello and welcome to Shareland. I am sorry to hear about your loss. Share is amazing place to let your hair down and enjoy the people who have walked that mile in your shoes. I am sorry to say that there is not much traffic here in the PA folder(I check it out regularly). I currently live in the Philadelphia area and I work for the MOD with the Family Teams. I would be happy to put you in touch with local families but you will certainly be able to use Share to connect with people all over the country.

Hi,
I just got on this site and was trying to get more involved with MOD. I have always donated to MOD but now it is personal! I am the proud mommy of a 26 weeker. Parker was born Aug. 23, 2008. He is doing AMAZING and I know it's because of God and the amazing staff at Lehigh Valley Hospital NICU. I would LOVE to be more involved then just writing a check...can anyone help or give suggestions?

My miracle
I haven't been on here in forever. I am the proud mommy of a 29 weeker. Haley spent amazingly only 5 weeks in the NICU which seemed like forever when she was in there. I am thankful that she is home and hope that I can help anyone else who might be going through the tough experience of having a baby in the NICU. We loved the nurses and staff in the NICU. They made it so much easier for us. I'm attaching some early pictures and some more recent ones.

Hello, I am a fairly new preemie mom to Janalee a 30-weeker born at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, PA. She just turned 1 year old on October. 16, 2010. We are Preeclampsia/HELLP survivors. I have been trying to find a support group in my area. I would like input from anyone who know's of one or could give me info. about how to get one started. Even though it has been a year the shock has not worn off and I think it helps to talk with other people that have experienced the same.

Hi Jodie! Welcome to Share!
Hey, I'm in the Pittsburgh area, out by Cranberry. I too, lost my first born. If you ever want to get together or meet people I will be more than willing to get you the support you need. Whether it be through our local West Penn division of the MOD or local support in or around the city.
I personally do alot through the West Penn hospital system. My daughter was born at AGH in 2009. My son, at Magee back in 2003.
I have family in the south hills and would be willing to travel to do lunch or coffee.
If you are interested or you just need contacts for supports groups or even social workers, I can help with that, too!
Email me if you'd like,

Love and Light,
Liz
