AUGUST 4, 2012

Aug 04, 2012 02:17pm (EST)

Anabella and her twin sister were born premature at 31.3 weeks. I found out the next day that she has a TE fistula. Being an RN, I should have realized what that was and what that meant but it being so personal and close to home my brain and knowledge went out the window. It was repaired a few days later and luckily we did not have to complete the surgery in 2 steps with a Gtube placement, the surgeon was able to repair it the first time. She was on a ventilator and had a chest tube for a week along the while her sister Stella was able to receive food and now at 36 weeks, Stella may be coming home without her twin sister.
They are still in the NICU and Anabella is still not nippling like she should. They are now nippling her every other feeding and gavaging the other feedings. I am so worried that she will not be able to swallow or feed from a bottle and will need a Gtube anyway. I am trying not to compare her to Stella and wonder why she just won't eat. We have done 2 swallow tests and the came back ok with narrowing but no leakage. I wonder how long other babies stayed in the NICU due to not eating well? She is gaining weight but not because she is feeding well. Speech therapy is working with her but she seems to "poop" out early or maybe she is having difficulty swallowing. I am very worried and concerned for the present and future for my baby.
