NEW BEGINNINGS

Jun 29, 2012 03:20am (EST)

Hi i'm heather. im 21 and I recently had twin girls at 24 weeks on april 18, 2012.

Maddison was the biggest she was 1lb 5oz and clarissa was 1lb 1.3oz.
The girls are still in the NICU. Maddison is now 3lb 3 oz and clarissa is 3lb 2.3 oz. It is very stressful to be a parent of the NICU to say the least. The girls are both still on the oscelator and oxygen levels still pretty high. its scary! lately the doctors have been talking about their "quality of life" and sounding very grim and it saddens meBoth girls have also had about 5 blood transfusions each.

I'm so proud of my girls and all they've accomplished, theyre doing good with their feed, they're both up to 9ml / hr! they've almost tripled their birth weight. however their lungs are still in pretty bad shape. Since they've been on the oscelator for so long, the tissue between their lungs and bloodstream had developed scaring which makes it hard for the oxygen to get from the lungs to the bloodstream. The only way to help this scaring is by lowering the girls oxygen and mean pressure, but the girls arent allowing that too much. so all we can do is pray.

Both maddie and clarissa have exhibated themselves twice and exhibated a few other times as well, its very scary we didnt know if maddie was going to make it the first time. All we can do is hope and pray that theyll get better.

We recently signed up for the march of dimes and will be walking on sep. 16 , and the girls will be in an article in the newspaper through the march of dimes! My fiancee and I are very excited!
